WORKSHOPS

Sat 28 October - free workshop @ JMI Live

This workshop presents an open opportunity to discuss music, the saxophone, and life with Caroline Davis (USA).

Mobile since her birth in Singapore, saxophonist, composer, and vocalist Caroline Davis’s expression covers a wide range of styles, owed to her shifting environment as a child. From angular, melody-present instrumental outfits to soulful, quirky song writing, Caroline’s persona is recognizably present. As an improviser and saxophonist, she has released six albums under her name and has won Downbeat’s Critic’s Poll Rising Star. Through the years, her work continues to garner praise in domestic and international publications.

Davis has shared musical moments with Lee Konitz, John Zorn, George Cables, Angelica Sanchez, The Femme Jam, Matt Mitchell, Terry Riley, Nicole Mitchell, Miles Okazaki, Geoffrey Keezer, Rajna Swaminathan, and Billy Kaye, among many others. She regularly sings and writes songs with the experimental R&B band, My Tree. Her composition work has led her to be a resident fellow at MacDowell, The Jazz Gallery, The Rockefeller Estate, and ICE Ensemble Evolution; and she has been awarded Jerome Hill, CMA, and NYFA fellowships. Her compositions often integrate science and music, influenced by her Ph.D in Music Cognition. Caroline is an advocate for gender equity (This Is A Movement, The New School) and carceral justice (Justice for Keith LaMar).

Caroline was recently shortlisted for the 2023 DownBeat 71st Annual Critics Poll for Alto Saxophone alongside the likes of Lakecia Benjamin, Kenny Garrett, Steve Coleman, Jim Snidero, and Anthony Braxton.

In collaboration with the Brisbane International Jazz Festival (BIJF), Talkin’ Jazz is excited to present this unique one-day workshop and performance opportunity for young women interested in playing jazz music. This workshop is for high-school aged students identifying as female or non-binary. Previous experience in jazz is desirable, but not required although it is recommended that students possess reasonable technical fluency on their instrument.

Established mentors will teach students performance and improvisational skills through a curated selection of jazz repertoire, culminating in the incredible opportunity to perform as part of the 2023 Brisbane International Jazz Festival!

Dates, times and cost:
Saturday 14th October 9am–1pm – Workshop Day at the Brisbane Jazz Club
Saturday 21st October from 2pm – Soundcheck rehearsal and performance

The total workshop cost is $60.00.
Please note, no food will be provided

What to expect: The Young Women’s Workshop will provide an incredible opportunity for participants to meet other women in jazz, both young and old, new and experienced. Participants should expect to have fun, be challenged in a supportive environment, and to pick up a bunch of new skills to improve their playing of jazz and improvised music!

You will need to bring your instrument and a folder for your music. We will be providing all sheet music ahead of time so students can familiarise themselves with the repertoire before the Workshop.

Mentors:
Martha Baartz (Saxophone)
Sharon Nobs (Trumpet)
Peta Wilson (Piano)
Helen Russell (Bass)
Grace King (Drums)
Kayleigh Pincott (Vocals)

Performance details: On Saturday the 21st of October, the Workshop participants will present a short performance at ‘The Clubhouse’ (Moorooka) as part of the Opening Party of the 2023 BIJF. This performance will be in support the others ensembles performing that evening including the Unladylike Big Band, Huda the Goddess and Reuben Lewis, and Kristin Berardi. The performance is scheduled to start at 3:30pm. Tickets will be required for parents/friends of participants to attend.

FOR PARENTS: Please note that registration payment will be required to secure a place in the program by October 9th. While we appreciate the support and interest of parents, the Young Women’s Workshop Day is exclusively for participants.

APPLICATIONS CLOSE ON FRIDAY 6TH OCTOBER

PARTICIPANTS WILL BE CONTACTED BY MONDAY 9TH OCTOBER

Please note, ‘The Clubhouse’ is a public performance space and we cannot control the environment. We will be recording the evening for our promotional purposes and to document the event, but we cannot control who else may be recording or photographing the evening. E.g. The BIJF may record snippets of performances for promotional use on their Facebook and social media pages. You are welcome to record or photograph as well.
